Vastu is a branch of edifice science and complete understanding of direction, geography, topography, environment and physics.
Vastu means the dwelling of humans & Gods. Vastushastra is an ancient science which helps one to get the natural benefits freely offered by the five basic elements of the universe in which we all live. These basic elements [panch maha bhutam] are Akash (SKY), Prithvi (EARTH), Paani (WATER), Agni (FIRE), and Vayu (WIND).
Vastu orientates places and dictates the proportions of every detail as in building lines, skylines, elongations, levels, slopes, water tanks (underground and overhead), kitchen, bedrooms, toilets, staircase, heights of ceilings and roofs, entrances and locations of doors and windows, compound walls and so on...
Many Vastu principles are derived from 'Vastu Purusha Mandala' depicted as a man lying with his head pointing north east, in a grid of usually 64 squares.
